The Kandawgyipalace Hotel 5 *
The Kandawgyi Palace, on the shores of the tranquil Kandawgyi Lake (Royal Lake), was originally opened in 1934 as the Rangoon Rowing Club. Membership in those days was restricted to foreigners and their invited guests. From 1943 to 1945, it was used as a maternity hospital and later re-opened as the Union Club of Burma, frequented by Burmese government officials and their guests until, in the 1960s; it became the National Biological Museum. The dinosaur standing tall near the swimming pool is a reminder of those days. Nowadays, gracious Myanmar architecture using local golden teak and modern conveniences blend with the beauty of the lake, gardens and original old rainforest trees to make the Palace an ideal tourist hotel, full of character and history.
